I've been a Peterson Tuners fan since the 80's...heck - my last name is actually Peterson. I love the iphone\ipad app and I was thrilled to get this one given that it was configurable via software and had firmware that could be easily updated. My trusty old VS-II tuner wasn't working properly on the DC adapter anymore (still works fine but ONLY on batteries) and I was building a new pedalboard and immediately this seemed like the perfect choice. And for my needs it is... I guess.
Honestly, It's a wonderful tuner. BUT...After only an hour or two of use a few things are starting to bug me.
Buyer's remorse items:
1. Useless for acoustic instruments - the ONLY way to even turn the thing on is to stick a 1/4" plug into it. I think I would have been just as happy to have the XLR DI be a mic INPUT instead; so you could use a microphone on it for picking up and tuning acoustic sounds.
2. The "software" for accessing the internal functionality (GUI) is really just a Google Chrome plugin: it only works if you install a specific web browser on your computer so insecure most IT guys I know consider it malware and forbid it to be installed in any professional environment.
Peterson: Google has conned you. Cut them loose and develop your own freestanding GUI - a proprietary web browser plugin for ANY piece of AV gear is absolutely laughable...especially if it only works on Google Chrome.
You'd be better off putting a NIC inside the thing and have an internal HTML based GUI that can be accessed from ANY browser. Companies like AJA, Extron and Barco do that kind of thing on lot of their gear all the time. But REQUIRING your customers to install a SPECIFIC browser is not very appropriate...ESPECIALLY GOOGLE CHROME. I actually expected a stand alone application of some sort.
3. Again the whole thing about it not even powering up unless there's a cable in it seems kinda wrong. When I first got the thing home I couldn't even be sure it was't broken when I gave it a quick test by hooking it up to a power supply and turning it on.
I don't know if any of this is discouraging enough to inspire me to return it yet, but it does rain on the parade a bit.
