BodyBeat™ Compact Pulsing Metronome

The Body Beat Metronome
The BodyBeat® offers a new approach on typical metronome use. The BodyBeat metronome produces a pulsing vibration allowing musicians to easily internalize the beat. The BodyBeat clips onto the belt line and a small separate “vibe clip” transmits the beat, in the form of a pulse (including subdivisions and accents) directly to the user.

Research has shown that separate neural pathways to the brain exist for tactile impulses and visible/audible information which is why musicians find that tactile pulses are quickly internalized, allowing them to concentrate on reading and listening to the music without the constant distraction of an audio or visual metronome. Feeling the beat, not having to listen to clicks or look at blinking LEDs makes it much easier to focus on the music and playing in correct time.

What’s the difference between a regular metronome and the BodyBeat?
Sophisticated metronomes can produce two or more distinct sounds. A regular "tick" sound indicates the beat within each measure, and another, distinct sound (often of a different timbre, higher pitch and/or greater volume) indicates the beginning of each measure. A tempo control adjusts the amount of time separating each beat (typically measured in beats per minute), while another, discrete, control adjusts the meter of the rhythm and thus the number of beats in each measure. This number is an integer often ranging from one to six, though some metronomes go up to nine or higher.

The BodyBeat provides drummers and percussionists with a rhythmic pulse they can feel rather than hear, avoiding the fatigue and potential harm caused by prolonged exposure to monotonous clicks and cowbell sounds. This patented technology represents a significant advance in the metronome field. The BodyBeat can also be used like an ordinary metronome with audible and visual modes. Suitable for all musicians.

"The Body Beat Metronome by Peterson directly addresses the historical problems musicians face in trying to learn rhythm. We all try to feel the beat and that is what this metronome does. I truly believe the Body Beat is going to fundamentally change the way rhythm is taught and understood at all levels. What's more it looks cool and is easy to use!"
-Roger Myers, Professor of Viola at the University of Texas at Austin, String Department Chair

"The Body Beat Metronome by Peterson is a new and innovative product that will help students, teachers and professionals experience rhythm in the most accurate way. This metronome will provide all musicians, and especially teachers, a valuable tool for accurately and easily feeling rhythm and tempo through the internalization of beat."
-Dr. Eugene Dowdy, Department Chair and Associate Professor, Department of Music at the University of Texas at San Antonio

1. What is the benefit of feeling the pulse over hearing the pulse?

Feeling the beat has many advantages but the most important is the establishment of an internal metronome. With the body Beat, a musician has a metronome that builds this sense of “feeling the rhythm” right away. There is no translation from hearing to feeling when you use the Body Beat.

2. Where do you recommend a user to place the vibe clip?

Always place the vibe clip with the barrel facing you at either the base of the spine or the back of your hip. You need to place the clip near bone so you can receive a very clean beat.

3. How long is the battery life? About 27 hours of constant use. This translates into several months of practical daily use for each battery.

4. How would you use this in a group setting?

The best way to use the Body Beat in a group setting is by having the person wearing the metronome lead the group. This process has been observed in several different group settings from a section in an orchestra, a Suzuki group class, to a percussion ensemble and each of these had great success. When you have the “Body Beat Leader” guiding a group, the other musicians tend to lock into their leader better and the group then is much more together and cohesive.
