1. Set desired temperance on the tuner.
2. Select one or two frets per string (or open).
3. If two frets are selected on a string (or a fret and the open string), rather than trying to "cage" the display, balance the speed up/down on the tuner with the two values.

This yields a virtually unlimited palette of tunings on a fretted instrument.

Here is an example for the guitar:
Set temperance to:
C:-1.5
C#:+1.5
D:+4.5
D#:+1.5
E:-1.5
F:-4.5
F#:-1.5
G:+1.5
G#:+4.5
A:+1.5
A#:-1.5
B:-4.5

For the low E, tune (balance) the E3 fret and the open string.
For the A, tune (balance) the E3 fret and the open string.
For the D, tune (balance) the E3 fret and the open string.
For the G, tune (balance) the E4 fret and the open string.
For the B, tune (balance) the E4 fret and the open string.
For the high E, tune the open string (E4).
