The Art of Sweetened Tuning – Strings
Peterson tuners feature unique Sweetener™ presets not found in any other brand of tuner. This comes from an almost 70-year legacy that reaches back to the dawn of popular music as we know it today.
Decades of research and the experience of musicians the world over has led to the creation of the “Sweetener”, a system of preset tuning offsets designed for specific instruments, only available on Peterson tuners, and used worldwide wherever precise and professional results are demanded.
Violin, viola, and cello are tuned to perfect fifths. This mirrors the ear’s natural wish to hear no beats when adjacent strings are played together, whether open or stopped. As a rule, pure intervals are always desirable when playing in ensemble with other string players. In situations where fixed pitch instruments are prominent, raising the pitch of the lower strings slightly, particularly in the case of viola and cello, may be necessary. Besides the Sweetener presets VLN, VLA & CLO (violin, viola and cello), the EQU preset may also be used for rehearsing melody lines. EQU mirrors the intonation of a piano or piano-accompanied voice. The tuner’s accuracy is such that up- and down-bowing pitch differences can be detected and displayed exactly as they happen due to the real-time operation of the tuners, enabling the user to improve technique as well as intonation skills.
